The Orange Cap was introduced a week after IPL began. The player who scored the most runs during the season would wear the cap while fielding. The overall leading run scorer would win the Orange Cap on the last day of the season. With two new IPL teams, the competition for the Orange Cap is set to get more fierce.
One such player will be KL Rahul, who has a proven record as a batsman. Rahul finished third in the Orange Cap race last season with 626 runs in 13 innings. He is currently the highest run scorer in the IPL and will play for the Lucknow Super Giants. However, if Rahul is unable to replicate his success from last season, the competition will be a tougher one.
Rajasthan Royals lead the points table of the IPL 2022. With a net run rate of +2.100, they are the clear favourites. Shreyas Iyer’s KKR is in second place, followed by the Gujarat Titans and the Punjab Kings. Lucknow Super Giants are fifth, Royal Challengers Bangalore are seventh, and Sunrisers Hyderabad are tenth.
Umesh Yadav is the current holder of the Orange Cap for the most number of wickets in IPL 2022. Rahul Chahar is number two, Yuzvendra Chahal of the Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans’ Mohammad Shameer are the top five bowlers. All these batsmen are ranked according to strike rate, but they have to perform exceptionally well to win the cap.
The first Orange Cap was won by Australian Shaun Marsh, who represented the Punjab Kings in the inaugural IPL. He scored 616 runs in 11 matches. Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs scored in an IPL season with 973. Both players are contenders to win the Orange Cap in IPL 2022. Once each team has played a match, the Orange Cap race will begin.
Jos Buttler, who has been playing at number two for Mumbai Indians, is the leading batsman in the Orange Cap race with 218 runs in three matches. Quinton de Kock, who played an outstanding innings of 56 runs against the Punjab Kings, is next with 107 runs. Liam Livingstone, who has nine wickets, is fourth with 98. The last three games of the tournament were played on Sunday, and he is in the mix with Jos Buttler for the Orange Cap.
